The Lidcombe Program of Early Stuttering Intervention was developed by Professor Mark Onslow and others in Australia beginning in 1990. Since then it has been thoroughly researched and tested by speech pathologists all over the world. The stuttering child and parent attend weekly office visits so that the parent can be trained to work with the child at home during the week. A daily record of stuttering severity is kept by the parent and brought to each session to determine the next step in treatment. All treatment procedures are first demonstrated by the speech pathologist before the parent participates in activities with the child in the clinic and eventually at home.
Mark Power, M.A., CCC was trained directly by Professor Onlsow and others to administer the Lidcombe Program in the United States. Children between the ages of 3 years and 6 years are good candidates for the program. Although about 75% of preschoolers may recover without therapy, if your child has been stuttering for more than two months, and shows signs of struggle and frustration, an evaluation by a speech pathologist specializing in stuttering is recommended.
