COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Stutter-Free Speech Program was developed by Dr. George Shames at the University of Pittsburgh in 1980. The program teaches children and adults a new way of speaking which is incompatible with stuttering. Workshop participants will learn to produce slow speech rates and continuous phonation using training tapes as models, which they take with them to use with their clients. Using a guided practice model, participants will experience rate changes during reading and conversation. Finally, behavioral contracts are provided which facilitate transfer of new speech behaviors to the client's natural speaking environment. The instructor completed this program himself in 1982 and has since been trained by Dr. Shames to be a facilitator.
LEARNER OUTCOMES: * Participants will learn the rationale for selecting the therapy program most suitable for their individual client. * Participants will learn how to conduct the establishment, transfer and maintenance phases of the therapy program. * Participants will experience the programs themselves before presenting them to their clients. * Participants will role-play both client and clinician. Participants will leave the workshop ready to implement effective therapy for stuttering.
SUGGESTED AUDIENCE: Speech Language Pathologists working with clients who stutter in public schools.
